[05 Jul 2009|10:09pm] |
Children, children, so much bad blood.
Let us leech it like some kind of medieval doctor, bleeding his plague-riddled patient.
Remember, no internet detectivery, no death threats, keep it above the waist. Let's keep it clean, ladies and gents!
CHALLENGE: Say something genuinely nice and honest about a fellow MM poster without sexual innuendo. Go on, I dare you.

If you're still reading my entries wherein I rant about this really awful depressing shit, I just want to take the time to say I love you.
( More bullshit. )
I've been watching Daria episodes these past three days and I really forgot how much I loved that show. AND! It's coming out on DVD next year!!11 I am so excited, I'm definitely pre-ordering it. I appreciate it so much more now that I'm older, which is nice. I work later today, then I'm off the next two days, and I'll take advantage of the time off to start packing. I haven't done any packing yet and I have less than two weeks to get my shit together. Knowing me I won't fully finish packing until after I move but whatever. It'll be a nice distraction.

This is one of *those* workplace questions.
My friend works for a government entity. He's been harassed for years because he's a union official who isn't afraid to stand up for what he believes in and the management hates the union. These past incidences are documented in writing to CPSU and to the HR department.
Basically, over a year ago he was caught playing solitaire on the computer, and they put him on 1 year probation. By comparison, everyone checks their private email accounts and surfs the net when there's nothing to do, and we only get the occasional verbal warning (nothing official).
Anyways, he believes his 1 year probation ended as of June 30th.
In the past couple days (after he believes he was off probation), he was checking his COMPANY email on flextime; checking company email on company time is permitted, though management has refused to let him do so without their permission, which in our opinion is harassment (there are other rules they make just for him, like he has to sign in and sign off his shifts in the presence of a supervisor, etc).
After that, he came into work one morning and there was no work on the floor level assigned to him, so he went onto another level. The supervisor wanted to have a word with him, but was unable to find him on the level he was assigned, so that sup and the general manager called him into a meeting to reprimand him for it...and he's sure he's getting the sack tomorrow. He's asked the sup and manager to get these reprimands for being on the wrong floor, checking his company email account, in writing via email...I'm not sure if they ever did that.
I know there's an entity concerned with workplace laws to go to in these situations...considering he's already contacted CPSU on this, would going to this entity help him?
My laywoman's advice to him was to get all the emails about the incidents off his company email account ASAP and onto the accounts of other union officials, because if they sack him he immediately has no access to the emails, and there goes his paper trail when he wants to bring a wrongful dismissal lawsuit against them. And wisen the fuck up when he knows they're after him, though this is pretty damn ridiculous.
I'm interested in the thoughts of you law savvy folks out there.

| Pet-friendly housing in Melbourne??? |
[05 Jul 2009|06:00pm] |
Hi guys, I hope it's ok for me to ask advice here. I've been living in a crappy temporary apartment (like a dorm) in Melbourne CBD for almost two months now while I search a pet-friendly share house that's not far away from the city. I really need to be either in the CBD (which I know would be hard) or in the surrounding burbs... somewhere within walking distance to the city. Is that really too much to ask? I know lots of people have dogs, but as soon as they hear I'm planning on adopting one they all shy away. :( I'm a good housemate; super reliable with rent, considerate, quiet, CLEAN... other than posting ads on gumtree and realestate.com, what can you recommend I do? Most of the people I know live out in the country so they can't really help.
Thanks for any leads, or at least for listening to me rant :)

Where's the best place in the CBD or Western Suburbs to get a sewing machine serviced? Mine is old, like 10+ years old, and the thread is constantly catching or breaking or getting tangled and ruining my projects (and yes, I am sure I'm threading it right). I know Spotlight services them but I don't know if they're any good or not.
Alternately, does anyone have a sewing machine in good nick that they're looking to sell?
Thanks in advance everyone.

So I found out yesterday morning that the reason my hours were cut was because I'm not 100% awesome when using the register. That's really their excuse. Which, okay. If I suck at the register, take me off of it. But don't take away my fucking shift because that just doesn't make sense.
Today I'm going to talk to the sort-of-manager and I will tell her that I don't want anything to do with the register. At all. Whether it's slow or not slow, I don't want to touch it. We'll see if they'll still take away my hours, because if they do, then it's just a personal problem they have with me.
I was super frustrated yesterday. My day was awful because all I could think about was this lame situation. And every time I thought of it, I got sick to my stomach. I hate worrying about this shit, I hate feeling stressed, and I hate that this is happening in the first place. I don't know how to really deal with this. Part of me doesn't want to care, but this situation is definitely personal and it's getting to me. I was applying for jobs all morning because if there's one thing I won't do is take this shit. I don't deserve it. I work hard, I'm great with the customers, and I do my job. I get frustrated but who wouldn't in my position? The entire thing is unprofessional and unwarranted, and I want out of there as soon as possible.
My family agrees and they're willing to support me while I get this shit settled. I want to sit here and type every little thing about this situation but it would take me a long time and I'm lazy. I work 4-10. Hopefully I leave feeling a lot better than I do now. Wish me luck.

| Changing Our Eating Habits |
[04 Jul 2009|07:16pm] |
|
Originally published at Jingwen. Please leave any comments there. Mr. M and I do not eat heathily. It’s a lifestyle thing – we spend a lot of time just lounging around in the evening, and by the time we actually realise that we’re hungry, it’s usually around 9pm or later. It’s not a time that’s conducive to cooking up a healthy feast in the kitchen, nor to even slapping together a simple sandwich. Instead, we find ourselves driving out for take-away food: chips with gravy, KFC, Macca’s, kebabs, basically whatever’s fast, unhealthy, and still open at that time. We’ve found ourselves driving to Macca’s at midnight for their soft serve and apple pie much too many times.
We can’t keep doing this. Not only is it really bad for our overall health, but it’s really unhealthy for our wallets. If we’re going out for both lunch and dinner, we can easily spend $20AUD a day on take-out food each, which is ridiculous when that same amount could buy a few day’s worth of groceries. Neither of us are financially able to support this kind of habit – he has student debts to pay off, I have a house to save up for, etc.
So, we’ve decided to completely overhaul our eating habits. I have a friend who works as a grocerer – he works at the wholesale produce market and gets fruit and vegetables at cost price. We’ve approached him to supply us with $15AUD worth of fruit and veggies each week – that’s about a full fridge’s worth of produce when you’re buying at cost price. With the produce we’d then:
- Make two litres worth of juices every two days as a healthy drink (rather than fizzy or sweet drinks) – from apple juices, carrot juices, celery juices, etc., all mixed up in a blended concoction
- Have fruit as a snack
- Prepare carrot/celery/etc as snack foods that we can have with different dips and cheese and stuff.
- Cook all other vegetables – whether roasting, baking, steaming, stir-frying, whatever.
That way even if we eat out once or twice a week, we’re still having healthy food the rest of the time, which would make a huge difference to both our health and our wallets. I think he’s concerned about his protein intake so he’ll probably grill a steak every now and again – I on the other hand, have never really been a big fan of red meat so could happily give up eating meat when with him and only eat it when we dine out.
In any case, that’s the plan. No more unhealthy food (or at least, less of it!), and a dramatic increase of our intake of fresh produce. Added savings each week, which in turn will put us in a better financial situation that will allow us more options.

| Oh my God, shoes. |
[03 Jul 2009|10:20pm] |
Hello all!
a. I bought this amazing leather jacket on sale (MNG, you are my new best friend) last week, and I've been wearing it almost every day since. Despite my best efforts to treat it as nicely as possible, the stitching on the pockets is already beginning to come undone. SUCKS TO BE ME. Would anybody like to recommend me a really good tailor (northern suburbs or CBD would be nice) who'd be able to fix it for a decent price and not destroy my jacket?
b. Fairly similar sob story: I've put my favourite pair of vintage Yves Saint Laurent boot-heel-shoes through a bit of trauma - one of the heels is coming loose, and they're a bit dirty and scuffed. They're silk, I think. Shoe-repairer recommendations?
c. SHOE PORN.
Your turn. Have a great weekend, kids.

| I Found A Job |
[03 Jul 2009|10:09pm] |
|
Originally published at Jingwen. Please leave any comments there. Just about three weeks ago, I mentioned that I was looking for a new job as I didn’t feel challenged in one of my part-time positions. Well, I found one – less than three weeks after I started seriously applying for jobs in a field related to my Masters studies. I was interviewed yesterday, and they were sufficiently impressed to offer me the position today after having contacted my referees. They were, and I quote, “absolutely blown away by your experience, your communication skills, how personable you were, and the suggestions and comments you made for advancing the organisation and improving its exposure in the community”. What can I say, I interview well.
I’m feeling very employable right now, which makes a nice change to earlier this year when I was unemployed for two months despite applying for about ten jobs each day. Anyway, some details:
- It’s an administrative role in a not-for-profit support organisation for social and disability work professionals. The role will include not only day-to-day administrative duties, but also event organisation (for seminars, etc.), membership coordination, marketing, with a strong emphasis too on revamping the organisation’s website and creating a stronger web presence.
- It’s a fixed term part-time position at 0.6 EFT. In other words, it’s a three-days-a-week position, for a fixed term of two months.
- The organisation is so small that for the time I’ll be there, I’ll essentially be running the whole place by myself. There’s bucketloads of autonomy in the role which I thrive on.
I’ll be handing in my two week’s notice for my other admin position next week – but in the next two weeks, I’ll be working seven day weeks. Two days at my current admin position (to fulfill two week’s notice), three days at the baby store, and I’ve negotiated with my new employers an agreement that for the first two weeks, I’ll work two days rather than the contracted three days. It’s going to be tiring, but I imagine exhilarating at the same time – I’m one of those crazy people who thrive on new work, new experiences, etc.
On a sour note, my parents are concerned that I’m giving up a permanent part-time position for a contracted temporary part-time position, but I think the benefits far outweigh the negatives. Yes, I may not have that particular job after the two months, but I’ll still have my weekend retail position at the baby store so I won’t exactly be broke. The fact that I’ll be working for a not-for-profit organisation in my chosen career field is much more important than working a permanent dead-end job that I’m bored in. It’s relevant experience that I can add to my resume when I look for another job in the same sector – placing me far above other candidates. It’s the first step along an actual “career path”, and it’s bound to lead to many more steps.
